About

Centre of Excellence for Data Analytics and Business Insights (CEDABI)

“Big Data is a big deal”. This aptly summarizes the increasing importance of the big data concept as a collection of technologies and activities turning massive and constantly growing data into organizational and business assets.

This new Centre, CEDABI, is focused on Data-Driven Innovation (DDI) and its contribution to economic growth. Data Analytics drives Innovation that in turn leads to increased Productivity that leads to Economic Growth.

Situated in the MYRA School of Business, the CEDABI research, training and industry collaborations will have a major impact on important areas of human endeavour, such as business, health care, social policy, and energy. Advanced data analytics will lead to actionable insights for products and services.

Our vision is to create a consortium of government and industry partners that will provide research problems and data, engage with MYRA researchers and students on these problems, and benefit from the ongoing research of the Centre. At the same time, the Centre will pursue synergies with other academic institutions, where problems of making sense out of big data exist. The Centre‘s mission is the development of the management and decision-making expertise to transform the operational observations of Big Data Analytics into strategic actionable insights.

The Centre will work collaboratively with MYRA researchers in a variety of disciplines as well as researchers in other institutions and with industry, where the Centre contributes its data science expertise and partners from different disciplines and industry bring their research questions and data.

The Centre aims to:

  • Be a focal point and centre of expertise in Big Data Analytics in India, particularly in Karnataka
  • Address research challenges arising from Big Data. Identify and foster interdisciplinary research programs, themes and/or initiatives.
  • Develop frameworks and tools for deriving Business Insights from Big Data Analytics
  • Develop and Publish Annual Indices of Business Sectors based on Data Analytics
  • Provide Training in Big Data Analytics with a focus on Business Insights
  • Offer Advisory/Consultancy Services to industry and academic organisations
  • Create a International Research Hub of experts in the domain

A unique advanced research and advisory entity--the Centre will develop a number of initiatives in advanced training and technology transfer in collaboration with industry and academia across the world. Given MYRA’s already existing international collaborations with top universities across the world, the CEDABI will build on the existing linkages and develop into a Global Research Collective in Business Insights and Analytics.

Keynote

Dr. Michael Shepherd

CEO and Professor
CEDABI, MYRA School of Business &Professor of Computer Science Dalhousie University, Canada

Dr. Shepherd is a Professor in Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. On July 1, 2015, he stepped down as Dean of the Faculty after serving for 7 years.

As Dean, he lead the initiative to create the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie, the first such institute in Canada. The Institute has become a research focus for the University with a steady stream of visitors from all parts of the world, collaborating in big data analytics research in oceans, health and aerospace. The Institute also offers specialized courses to local industry to help train their people in big data analytics. He also helped to create an ICT Sandbox in the Faculty for budding student entrepreneurs, providing them a sandbox in which to develop their ideas and to receive both technical and business mentorship.

His research interests include visual text analytics, information retrieval, user profiles and personalization, and health informatics. A number of his students have gone on to start successful IT companies in Canada and in the United States, and others to work for major companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook.

Dr. Shepherd has contributed to the development of the ICT profession by working in and leading a number of professional associations. He has served as Vice-President of the Canadian Association for Computer Science and as President of the Canadian Association for Information Science. Currently, he is Vice-President of the Canadian Network for Visual Analytics Centres, a member of the National Computer Science Steering Committee, a member of the board of the World Confederation of Productivity Science, and a member of the board of Digital Nova Scotia and previously served as its Vice-Chair. He was Co-Chair of the recent, very successful, Big Data for Productivity Congress that attracted 500 delegates from 12 countries around the world.

Dr. Shepherd was recently honoured by being elected a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science.

Mr. David J Kasik

Senior Technical Fellow
The Boeing Company Seattle, Washington

David J Kasik is the Boeing Company’s Senior Technical Fellow in visualization and interactive techniques. He is pursuing new ways of using visualization for huge amounts of both geometric and non-geometric data. His work with geometric data made David a pioneer in interactive 3D computer graphics. He devoted his first 11 years at Boeing to research and development of computer-aided design software. These projects led to pioneering work in interactive 3D graphics, user interface management systems, and industrial use of non-uniform rational (NURBS) solids and surfaces.

David has worked to make 3D geometry available to the entire Boeing user community. Examples include:

  • IVT/Superviewer, which lets users see an entire virtual Boeing aerospace product without using special hardware.
  • Low-end visualization, which gives users access to 3D engineering drawings, parts lists, training material, etc.
  • Thin client, which makes high performance, interactive 2D and 3D visualization available to remote users.

David is pioneering the use of visual analytics to help extract more information from complex non-geometric data. Visual analytics supplements more traditional analytic techniques (like statistics and data mining) with a human’s ability to use vision to find anomalies and detect trends. Emerging visual analytics tools are being explored in areas as diverse as safety and marketing.

David is working with Brazilian and Canadian researchers on use of visual analytics in a mobile environment, with Brazilian and U.S. researchers on visualization of dynamic simulations of dense crowds, with Hungarian researchers on multi-sided surface patches, and with Korean researcher on dynamic transparency for complex geometric models.

He earned his Masters in Computer Science from the University of Colorado in 1972 and a Bachelor’s in Quantitative Studies from the Johns Hopkins University in 1970. He participates in numerous professional organizations, including ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), which named David a Distinguished Scientist in 2007 and a Fellow in 2013; ACM SIGGRAPH, where he started the annual Pioneers student mentoring program and received the Outstanding Service Award in 2012; and IEEE, where he is a past member of the editorial board and current member of the Advisory board of the IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications and was recognized as a Senior Member in 2013.
