MYRA Distinguished Lecture (7)

by

Mr. Arjun Malhotra

Co-founder, HCL Technologies

Former Chairman and CEO, Headstrong

18th January 2018 | 11:00 AM | Athena Auditorium, MYRA School of Business

‘Play your best hand, with the cards you have been dealt with’—pearls of wisdom from Arjun Malhotra, co-founder of HCL

‘Play your best hand, with the cards you have been dealt with’ – is the strong and key message from the personal anecdote ridden insightful talk on “Entrepreneurship” by Mr. Arjun Malhotra who delivered the 7th Distinguished Lecture today at the MYRA School of Business. Mr. Malhotra an individual of global eminence also sits on the Board of the MYRA School of Business. Like Mahabharata epic, the talk was filled with the multitude of side stories full of pearls of wisdom. What endeared Mr. Malhotra to the audience was his infectious energy and bonhomie.

To an eager and spellbound audience of MBA students at MYRA, the Board and the faculty members – Mr. Malhotra portrayed a vivid journey of enterprise, risk-taking, humility and the ability to predict trends while essaying his over 4 decades of the professional career as a strategist, technology clairvoyant, and entrepreneur.

Being a succor for logic according to him has been one of his professional bedrock as he started by narrating vividly the journey from Doon School to IIT Kharagpur onwards to his first career with DCM Ltd. in the 70s. Mr. Malhotra earned his Bachelor of Technology (Honors) in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur in 1970 and received the Dr. B C Roy Gold Medal for his achievements.

Mr. Malhotra took the audience through trials and tribulations of introducing a computer to DCM and the ominous threat of being pulled down by the Monopolies & Restrictive Trade Practices Act. With a proverbial desire of starting on his own, post DCM his first break happened when his fledgling start-up (founded along with Shiv nadir and four others in 1975) was called upon by the late Ved Luthra of Televista Electronics to sell his calculators. Having made up the cash reserves necessary in August 1976 the start-up was registered as Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL).  The rest is history, given his 23 years at the helm of HCL as its Vice Chairman. Now known as HCL Technologies it finds a place within the Forbes Global 200 list. It is among the top 20 largest publicly traded companies in India with a market capitalization of $18.7 billion as of May 2017. As of September 2017, the company, along with its subsidiaries, had consolidated revenue of $7.4 billion.

Now respected and revered as a pioneer in the Indian Information Technology industry, Mr.Malhotra has spent 42 years in the public and private domain.  In fact looking back Mr.Malhotra considers him lucky to have role the technology tiger twice. Once at 25 when microprocessors came in and later in 49 when the internet came in and he was in the US. In his speech to a rapt audience, Mr. Malhotra said – ‘How many people got to see two major technology paradigm shifts in their lifetime?’

Mr. Malhotra later touched upon his journey in founding TechSpan in 1998.  When TechSpan merged with Headstrong—a US-based IT consulting company, he became the CEO of Headstrong in 2004 and served in that position until the end of 2011, when it was bought over by Genpact. Mr. Malhotra currently serves as Director of the Board at Lumis Partners; Pyramid Cyber Security America Inc.; A T Group; Evolphin Software Inc.; Mapmygenome-The Indian Genomics Company; and Entercoms.

Mr. Malhotra as many might be aware founded the Prof. G.S. Sanyal School of Telecommunications and the Prof. M N Faruqui Center for Innovation at IIT Kharagpur through a personal endowment. He is on the Board of the IIT Kharagpur Foundation and serves as the Chairman of Vision 2020. Mr. Malhotra has been conferred with the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by IIT Kharagpur in September 2012. He is a winner of the Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs Award and is a recipient of many awards across the globe.

Welcoming the speaker and the audience Dr. Shalini Urs, Founder and Chairperson of MYRA School of Business underlined the importance of personal stories as lessons not only for gaining insights but also for enriching the lessons with a personal touch. Delivering his Vote of thanks, address – Dr.Sudhendar Rao, Professor of Information Systems and Dean-Student Affairs, thanked Mr. Malhotra for his words of wisdom and also appreciated his straight from the gut talk for the students reflecting on his experiences having ridden the technology tiger twice.
