The Road to Success…..

A Memorable Glance at MYRA Graduation Day 2016

June 20, 2016

Today, 20th of June 2016, students travelled from far and wide to attend the pinnacle of all the celebrations of the year, their Graduation Day. This day, marking the graduation of the 2nd batch of 45 PGDM students and the 3rd batch of 15 PGPX students, was yet another fantastic event; not only for the graduates and their families but for the faculty of the business school as well.

The function commenced with ‘The Tree Planting Activity’ followed by the academic procession marching into the Athena Auditorium led by the Karnataka Police Band, once an integral part of the Maharaja’s court. The students marching to the mesmerizing tune of the band had the audience enthralled.

Dr. Wolfgang Messner, Professor of International Management, warmly welcomed the gathering after the National Anthem was played by the Police Band.

Dr. Abhinanda Sarkar, Associate Dean and Director of research, in his welcome address spoke about how sustainability is as important as the passion of creating. In this regard he told the students that what they learnt at MYRA will stand them in good stead and stressed on the importance of forming a strong alumni network. Dr. Abhinanda advised them to be good ambassadors to MYRA, Mysore and our country and he concluded by saying that the power of an institution lies in the power of its people.

Dr. Sudhindra Seshadri, Senior Associate Dean and Professor of Marketing introduced the guests.

Dr. Shalini Urs, Chairperson, MYRA School of Business, spoke about the Journey of MYRA, from the time it was just an idea to the reality of what MYRA is today. She spoke about its vision, to be truly global with global perspectives and global exposure. She mentioned that the visiting faculty offer students unique opportunities like global experiences. She referred to the 4 Cs namely courage, commitment, continuity and change that define the journey of MYRA. She advised the students to go out and make it happen with hard work and tenacity.

Dr. M G Parameswaran, Founder, Brand-Building.com, in his convocation address focused on the three types of risks and the importance of taking sensible risks. He gave examples of the product line, Brufen which had a major setback because of mislabeling but managed to circumvent it by taking certain risks in terms of handling the Drug Control Authorities. He also narrated the example of the entrepreneur, V S S Mani of Just dial, in taking calculated risks and succeeding. Taking the example of Kaun Benega Crorepati (KBC), he cited how a mid-level manager of Star TV took the risk of sticking his neck out and suggesting the idea of bringing the international series ‘Who Wants to be a Millionnaire’. He Indianised it, brought in a star like Amitabh Bachchan who at that time was going through tough times and built a huge brand and catapulted both Star TV and Amitabh Bachchan into a different league altogether. He concluded by quoting Swami Vivekananda, “Take risks in your life. If you win, you can lead, if you lose you can guide!”

The Chief Guest, Shri Ranjan Mathai, Former Foreign Secretary, Government of India, presented the diplomas and silver medals to the students. In his address, he made a mention of a few themes that are of relevance to their future. Beginning with their aspirations he spoke to them about using their skills and expertise in a global world, about the need for transformation despite progress and the significance of developing strategies accordingly. He highlighted the fact that global engagement can improve the economy and explained how exports accounted for 25% of the country’s GDP and post 1992 it accounted for 50% of the GDP only through global engagement. He spoke about MYRA contributing to the global map with its stamp of individuality and opening doors for the next generation. Talking about Mysore, he made a mention about how the Mysorean rockets were influential in the British rocket development as the rockets were far more advanced than the British had previously seen. On a concluding note, he urged them to be good global citizens while remaining true Indians.

Anish N Anil, PGDM student of the graduating batch in his valedictory speech spoke about the exposure he received at MYRA through the foreign exchange programmes, the various clubs and the guest lectures.

The ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Sudhendar Rao, Professor of Information Systems and Dean – Student Affairs. Dr. Rao while highlighting the need for a global outlook, advised the students to look back on the two years at MYRA and put into practice what they learnt. He wished them the very best and told them to continue learning while they embark on a new journey.
